Recently, I had the opportunity to sit in on Illuminate STEM’s summer program preparation meeting in Dallas, Texas. What stood out most wasn’t just the robotics curriculum — it was the intentional focus on confidence, problem-solving, and early STEM exposure.

Founded more than 13 years ago by robotics engineer Terrence Southern, Illuminate STEM has grown into a youth-focused organization serving approximately 2,000 students annually through robotics, engineering, coding, and hands-on STEM experiences.

As preparation begins for the organization’s Texas summer camps, Illuminate STEM is preparing to offer programming in Dallas, Mesquite, Richardson, and Arlington, continuing its mission of introducing students to innovation, teamwork, and technology through engaging learning environments. The training meeting began with a video that set the tone for the day.

In the video, a four-year-old student from Turning Point Christian Academy confidently talked his way through a coding activity he learned while participating in Illuminate STEM’s 15-week after-school program. As the child explained the logic behind the activity step by step, the room was reminded why early STEM exposure matters.

While Illuminate STEM’s upcoming summer programs are designed for students in grades 4 through 12, the moment reinforced Southern’s perspective that students benefit most when they are introduced to STEM learning early.

The organization initially focused primarily on high school students, but over time expanded its reach to younger students — helping nurture curiosity, communication skills, creativity, and confidence during formative years.

During the training and preparation meeting, instructors, mentors, and program leaders gathered to review curriculum plans, test STEM equipment, discuss student engagement strategies, and prepare for the upcoming season of robotics and engineering camps.

But beyond the drones, robotics kits, and curriculum planning, one thing became especially clear: Illuminate STEM is about far more than technology.

Led by educators and engineers with both professional and personal insight, the program creates environments where students feel connected, supported, and challenged through hands-on engineering and collaborative learning experiences.

The conversations throughout the training reflected a shared understanding that STEM education is not simply about building robots — it is about developing communication skills, teamwork, leadership, adaptability, and confidence.

Program leaders discussed the importance of helping students solve problems creatively, work together effectively, and see themselves as capable innovators both inside and outside the classroom.

Among this year’s instructors is a 2026 high school graduate who once participated in Illuminate STEM programs herself — a full-circle moment that reflects the organization’s long-term impact and commitment to developing future leaders.

Her presence on the instructional team serves as a reminder that mentorship, exposure, and opportunity can create lasting change.

What began years ago as a small effort to introduce students to STEM opportunities has continued to grow into a multi-state STEM education initiative, with programs operating in Texas and Michigan. The organization recently received a $200,000 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission to continue expanding its advanced technology educational impact across the state.

As the team prepares for another summer of camps and workshops, the focus remains the same: creating meaningful environments where students feel empowered to learn, build, collaborate, and imagine what is possible for their future.

Through engineering challenges, teamwork activities, and real-world problem-solving, Illuminate STEM continues creating spaces where innovation and encouragement go hand in hand.

The upcoming summer programs will include hands-on robotics and drone activities, engineering projects, coding experiences, 3D printing and digital design, and collaborative learning opportunities designed to engage students across multiple age groups and skill levels.

And if the energy inside the recent planning meeting was any indication, this summer’s students can expect more than a camp experience — they can expect to be challenged, encouraged, and inspired.
